The Electrical Design Engineer role at CERN's Electrical Engineering Group requires strong expertise in designing low voltage (LV) electrical distribution networks, including equipment sizing, protection studies, and lighting design. Candidates must have hands-on experience with LV design calculation tools such as ElecCalc, Caneco, or similar software, and be proficient in AutoCAD for preparing detailed design drawings and single line diagrams. Competency in secondary electrical design software, particularly E-PLAN or comparable tools, is essential. The role also demands knowledge of LV standards, protection mechanisms including indirect contact protection, earthing systems, and safety networks. A solid understanding of power system fundamentals such as voltage drop calculations, short circuit analysis, and cable/equipment dimensioning is required. Experience with medium-voltage distribution network design is advantageous. Additionally, proficiency in DIALux for building and outdoor lighting design is necessary. The position involves preparing calculation notes, lighting and earthing studies, and bills of materials for electrical equipment. Candidates should hold an educational background in Electrical Engineering and be fluent in English or French, with a willingness to learn the other language. A valid driving license is required due to work in radiation areas and underground installations. The role is fully onsite at CERN in Geneva and involves contributing to strategic projects including accelerator electrical renovations and substation consolidation. Overall, the position demands a combination of practical design skills, software proficiency, and knowledge of electrical engineering standards within a complex scientific infrastructure environment.
