Energy Hub: Hardware and Firmware Engineer (Contract / Short-term (V0 & V1 pilots))
Role highlights
Contract
Permanent
Senior
Remote · On-site
This senior-level contract role requires a Hardware and Firmware Engineer with a minimum of five years' experience specializing in embedded systems development, particularly using platforms such as ESP32 and STM32 or similar microcontrollers. The engineer will focus on prototyping and validating early-stage portable power system pilots (V0 and V1), involving hands-on modification, integration, and testing rather than mass manufacturing. Key technical competencies include deep familiarity with battery management systems (BMS), inverters, and power electronics, alongside practical experience working directly with hardware rather than simulations. The role demands expertise in integrating cellular communication modules, specifically GSM and LTE with SIM-based tracking capabilities, as well as GPS or other location telemetry systems. Additional responsibilities include configuring external control relays and shutdown mechanisms, validating AC/DC output limits, overload and low-battery shutdown behaviors, and ensuring safe charging protocols via AC adapters and solar-assisted kiosks. Candidates should demonstrate strong debugging skills, particularly for remote troubleshooting in ambiguous, early-stage environments. Preferred qualifications include experience with LiFePO₄ battery systems, solar power integration with MPPT controllers, and prior deployment of IoT devices in field conditions, especially within emerging markets. A bachelor's degree is required, with a preference for Europe-based applicants. The role emphasizes pragmatic problem-solving, safety in enclosure modifications, and adaptability to evolving pilot workflows and hardware configurations.

Role Summary
We're running early-stage pilots (V0 and V1) to validate hardware behaviour, firmware control, and operational workflows ahead of an institutional-scale deployment. This is a hands-on, prototype and pilot-focused role (not mass manufacturing) to modify, integrate, and test portable power systems.
Responsibilities
- Reconfigure pre-built portable power stations (where feasible)
- Integrate:
- GSM/LTE modules (SIM-based tracking, not Wi-Fi or Bluetooth)
- GPS or location telemetry
- External control relays / shutdown mechanisms
- Validate:
- AC and DC output limits
- Overload and low-battery shutdown behaviour
- Safe charging via AC adapters and solar-assisted kiosks
- Support safe enclosure modifications where required
Requirements
- Strong experience with embedded systems (ESP32, STM32, or similar)
- Hands-on experience with battery systems, BMS, inverters, or power electronics
- Comfortable working with real hardware, not just simulations
- Experience integrating cellular (GSM/LTE) modules
- Ability to debug issues remotely and pragmatically
- Comfortable working in an early-stage, ambiguous environment
- Minimum 5 years experience
- Europe-based preferred
Nice to Have
- Experience with LiFePO₄ systems
- Experience with solar + MPPT controllers
- Prior work on IoT devices deployed in the field
- Experience with power systems in emerging markets
