PhD Position in Quantum Programming Languages (Sapere Aude: DFF-Research Leader Project FunQ)

Role Summary

  • 3-year PhD position in quantum programming languages
  • Based at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science (IMADA), University of Southern Denmark, Odense
  • Interdisciplinary role: part of ACP (Artificial Intelligence, Cybersecurity, and Programming Languages), TAAG (Topology, Algebra, Analysis and Geometry), and the Centre for Quantum Mathematics (QM)
  • Embedded in the Sapere Aude: DFF-Research Leader project “FunQ: Quantum Programming Beyond the Circuit Model” led by Assoc. Prof. Robin Kaarsgaard
  • Focus on new abstractions, models, and programming languages for quantum computing
  • Collaborative team environment investigating mathematical foundations and realisation of a novel high-level quantum programming language
  • Direct collaboration with Assoc. Prof. Robin Kaarsgaard, an expert in quantum programming languages and categorical quantum theory
  • Proposed start: Winter 2026 (flexible)
  • Competitive salary; follows the PhD study programme at the Faculty of Science

Responsibilities

  • Research on mathematical foundations of quantum programming languages
  • Contribute to the development of a novel high-level quantum programming language
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams across sections and centres

Requirements

  • Highly motivated candidates interested in quantum computing and programming languages
  • MSc degree in computer science, mathematics, physics, or a related field (e.g., quantum computing, quantum information science)
  • Demonstrated experience in at least one of:
    • Theory of programming languages
    • Compilers and programming language implementation
    • Categorical quantum theory or other formal models of quantum computing (e.g., ZX-calculus)
    • Quantum computing in general
  • Fluency in English
